The bacterial flora of the stomach and small intestine.

چکیده
The alimentary tract at birth is either sterile or contains only a few micro-organisms (Wilson and Miles, 1955). Within a few days of birth a profuse flora is established in the mouth and large intestine. However, the small intestine remains relatively free from micro-organisms throughout life (Cregan and Hayward, 1953; Anderson and Langford, 1958a). Thus in health it seems that some antibacterial mechanism is present which prevents a resident flora from becoming established in the small intestine. The nature of this antibacterial mechanism is obscure. Cregan, Dunlop and Hayward (1953) have shown it to be independent of the gastric germicidal barrier. Anderson and Langford (1958a) have previously suggested that maintenance of normal intestinal motility is important. Evidence for this suggestion has been sought in the present study, which is an investigation of the flora of the small intestine in conditions where intestinal motility is affected by obstruction to the onward passage of intestinal contents. The patients examined included newborn and older children with obstructive lesions of differing aetiology and duration at differing sites along the small intestine. A search of the literature did not reveal any previous investigation in newborn or older children or even any thorough investigation of the intestinal flora in adults with intestinal obstruction. Therefore this paper will also describe the extent and nature of the flora of the small intestine in children with intestinal obstruction. The results of a similar study in adults are reported elsewhere (Bishop and Allcock, 1960).

Comparative study on bacterial flora of the intestine in Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) fingerlings reared in fiberglass tanks and earthen ponds
Stability of bacterial flora in fish intestine is very important, because the intestine is an important organ for outbreak of microbial infections and other fish diseases especially when the fish have not been vaccinated. The aim of this study was to determine the bacterial flora of intestine in sturgeon juvenile in earthen ponds. The results can be applied to prevent the diseases occurren...

In this study, random sampling conducted and 90 individuals of Persian sturgeon having 3-5g weight, collected by trawling in 3 earthen ponds and 15 individuals having 10-20g weight, collected by small net in 3 fiberglass Vans. After recording of biometrical characteristics, the intestine and rearing water were cultured on TSA medium. Gram staining and complementary tests were conducted. In orde...
متن کاملDistribution and metabolism of ingested NO3- and NO2- in germfree and conventional-flora rats.
Germfree and conventional-flora Sprague-Dawley rats were fed sodium nitrate or sodium nitrite in their drinking water (1,000 microgram/ml), and various organs, tissues, and sections of the intestinal tract were assayed for nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) by a spectrophotometric method. When fed NO3-, germfree rats had chemically detectable levels of NO3- (only) in the stomach, small intestine...
متن کاملDigestive system anatomy of the Acipenser persicus: New features
Sturgeon is one of the most important species of the Caspian Sea aquatics. Unfortunately, this species faces the threat of extinction today. This makes specific studies on any type of sturgeons more important than before. Studies like histological studies, radiology, and sonography, all require a complete understanding of the anatomy of this fish. Since pilot studies showed some misconceptions ...
